Charlestown trenchless sewer repair
We renewed a Charlestown sewer where a 4-inch lateral met a 6-inch main beneath a finished basement, with one continuous liner installed from inside the home. We inspect, clean, line and coat your Charlestown sewer from your basement.

We tied our inversion drum into the sewer through this floor opening on our Charlestown job.
Our Charlestown job
We bridged a 4-inch to 6-inch transition with one Charlestown liner.
Repeated backups pointed to the hub where this home’s smaller lateral met the larger main beneath a finished basement. Our high-definition camera showed heavy scale, cracking at the hub and infiltration, and we used the measurements from that recording to size one continuous cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) liner across the size change.
We jetted and descaled the run, inverted the resin-saturated liner from a basement opening and cured it in place. We brush coated the smaller branches, where their condition and diameter suited a coating. If your sewer changes size beneath a finished floor, we record it and measure whether one liner can bridge your transition.
What our camera found. Heavy scale, cracking at the hub and infiltration at a 4-inch to 6-inch transition.
What we did. Jetting, descaling and one continuous CIPP liner across the size change.
What else. Epoxy brush coating on the smaller branches.
Slide across these pipes to see a cracked hub and a lined run.
The Charlestown sewer had scale and cracking at a hub. These pairs show those conditions and the liner that covers them.

We descale your cast iron and cure a new wall inside it.We jet the scale out, then your liner cures against the old pipe so your drain flows over a smooth surface.

We line the larger main as well as the smaller lateral. One continuous liner can run from your 4-inch lateral into your 6-inch main when our measurements support it.
Our photographs show this Charlestown job inside the home.

Charlestown and BWSC
BWSC puts your Charlestown lateral and backwater valve in your hands.
Charlestown is served by the Boston Water and Sewer Commission. BWSC says owners are responsible for their building’s entire lateral, from inside the basement to its main in the street, and its regulations require backwater valves, at the owner’s expense, on building drains from fixtures liable to backflow from a Commission sewer.
A liner renews the wall of your lateral; a backwater valve stops flow from coming back into your building. Our recording shows the condition of your pipe, so you can plan both with the plumber or drain layer you hire.

After weeks of trying to find the right company, multiple estimates, and a genuinely difficult sewer situation, Boston Pipe Lining was able to install one continuous liner to the street. I had a failed backwater valve, sewage backup, significant groundwater intrusion (nearly 2 feet), and a very complicated double wye buried under concrete and rock. Most companies either couldn’t fully make sense of the system or told me pipelining through the double wye wasn’t possible. This company was able to make sense of the setup quickly, and the plumber they worked with identified the double wye almost immediately. Their quote was also the clearest and most detailed I received, which helped me research my options thoroughly and make the best-informed decision for a complicated project. They were the most reasonably priced company I spoke with, and throughout the process Travis was knowledgeable, communicative, and clearly committed to keeping projects moving efficiently while balancing a busy schedule. They also use Intuit for payments, which made handling a large payment much easier since I didn’t have to deal with cashier’s checks, debit card limits, or additional surcharges. Overall, I’m extremely happy with the work they did.
D B.Google review, Boston Pipe Lining did a terrific job at our house cleaning out our main sewer line and relining it. They showed us the before and after video of the line, they answered all of our questions and explained the process very thoroughly. They were very organized, on time and did a very nice job. I highly recommend them! Joe and Maryanne

We answer questions Charlestown owners ask about lining.

Can one liner run across a change in pipe size?
On our Charlestown job one continuous liner bridged a 4-inch lateral into a 6-inch main. We size your liner from the measurements in your recording and tell you whether your transition can be bridged the same way.
Did you open the Charlestown basement floor along the sewer?
No. We worked through a planned basement opening for the inversion drum instead of excavating along the full run under finished space.
Do I need a backwater valve?
BWSC’s regulations require backwater valves on fixtures liable to backflow from a Commission sewer, at the owner’s expense, and BWSC recommends them on fixtures below street grade.
Why coat some branches instead of lining them?
Smaller branches can suit a coating better because of their condition and diameter. On our Charlestown job we lined the transition and coated the smaller branches.
